Journey through the Imagination of Jules Verne

Take a journey into the imagination of Jules Verne at Broward County Library as it plays host to an exciting exhibit of the renowned science fiction author's personal artifacts, including original manuscripts and posters, Verne's model of Captain Nemo's Nautilus, and other one-of-a-kind memorabilia.

The collection, belonging to the French city of Amiens Metropole, was originally assembled by Piero Gondolo Della Riva, one of the world's foremost collectors of Jules Verne items. It focuses on the life of this extraordinary writer as well as his imaginary explorations into the worlds of science, technology and adventure that resulted in his world-famous novels that inspired international pop culture.

The exhibit, which has never been seen outside of Europe, will be on display through January 20, 2006, at Broward County's Main Library, gallery six, 6th floor, 100 South Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

The grand opening reception will be on Friday, December 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Broward County Main Library, gallery six, 6th floor.

On December 10, From Dream to Reality: Birth of a New Literary Genre, A Symposium on the Life and Works of Jules Verne will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the
Main Library Auditorium. Invited speakers include:

      • Walter James Miller (pioneer scholar on Jules Verne)
      • Jean Michel Margot, President, North America Jules Verne Society
      • Terry Harpold, Assistant Professor of English, University of Florida
      • Professor Arthur B. Evans, Department of Modern Languages, DePauw University

Journeys and Labyrinths: Breakfast and Dialogue with Fernando Savater

Broward County Libraries Division and Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College cordially invite you to a presentation by renowned philosopher and writer, Fernando Savater. Born in San Sebastián, Spain, Savater is one of the most recognized writers of contemporary Spanish literature. He will be presenting his latest work, the adventure novel El gran laberinto at the Southwest Regional Library, 16835 Sheridan Street, Pembroke Pines on Saturday, December 10 at 11 a.m. The presentation will be in Spanish. Literary Feast 2006

The 19th annual Literary Feast will be held on February 24 and 25, 2006, featuring more than 20 authors who will meet the public in a series of events. Here is a special sneak-peek at three of this year's authors:

María Amparo Escandón, a best-selling bilingual storyteller, published her first novel, Esperanza's Box of Saints and its Spanish version, Santitos, in 1999. Her novel was the number one best seller on the Los Angeles Times Best Sellers List, has been translated into 16 languages and is currently read in over 80 countries. She was named the "Writer to Watch" by Newsweek Magazine in 1999 and the "Writer to Watch" by the Los Angeles Times in 2000.

 

Les Standiford is the author of the novels Spill; Done Deal; Raw Deal; Deal to Die For; Deal on Ice; Presidential Deal; Black Mountain; Deal With the Dead; the e-book, Opening Day; Bone Key; and Last Train to Paradise: Henry Flagler and the Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Railroad that Crossed an Ocean.

Standiford is the co-author of Bones of Coral, a screenplay based on the novel of the same name by James W. Hall, for MGM-Pathe. He is a member of the Associated Writing Programs, Mystery Writers of America, and the Writers Guild.

He wrote the screenplay adaptation of Spill, which has been released as a feature film starring Brian Bosworth and seen recently on SHOWTIME. He is author of the text for the best-selling book of photographs by Alan S. Maltz, Miami: City of Dreams, and Coral Gables: The City Beautiful.

He has contributed a chapter to the national best-seller Naked Came the Manatee, with Carl Hiaasen, Elmore Leonard, James W. Hall, et al. He is a contributing editor of The Putt at the End of the World, a collective novel of golf, published by Warner Books in June of 2000.
He has recently completed a work of non-fiction scheduled for publication.

 

Bob Spitz has represented the careers of Bruce Springsteen and Elton John. He is the author of The Making of Superstars, Barefoot in Babylon, Dylan, and Shoot Out the Lights. His articles appear regularly in the New York Times Magazine, GQ, Condé Nast Traveler, Men's Journal, In Style, Esquire, Sky, and the Washington Post. He lives in Connecticut.
