Broward County's Rich History and Cultural Diversity
Celebrate Japanese Culture during the month
of June. Inside the lobby of the Broward County Governmental
Center, you can view a variety of Japanese displays. Brochures
and maps about Japan are also available. The Broward County
Governmental Center is located at 115 South Andrews Avenue
in Fort Lauderdale.

New
South Regional/Broward Community College Library
Broward County Library celebrated a groundbreaking
ceremony on May 12 for the new South Regional/Broward Community
College (BCC). The new two-story library will replace the
current library on the south campus of BCC in Pembroke Pines.
This building will be environmentally-conscious following
the guidelines of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) Green Building System, which was developed by
the U.S. Green Building Council.

Hats Off to Our Friends
Friends of Broward County Library invite you
to attend the Annual Friends' Luncheon in recognition of the
achievements of our Friends on Thursday, June 16 from noon
to 2 pm. The luncheon will be held at Diamante's Banquet Center
located at 6501 West Commercial Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.
Mayor Kristin Jacobs is the special keynote
speaker.

Meet Dora the Explorer
On June 13 from 2 to 3 pm, Dora the Explorer
will have a special Story Time on the first floor of the Alvin
Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center
at Nova Southeastern University located at 3100 Ray Ferrero,
Jr. Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. For more information about this

African-American Research Library and
Cultural Center
Join us to view an exhibition of artwork from
the first two hundred years of Haiti at the African-American
Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), 2650 Sistrunk
Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. The artwork is on display through

AARLCC is also offering a variety of programs
to celebrate Juneteenth. On June 12, the Mamlaka Club Choir,
Kenya's touring choir, will be performing at 3 pm. On June
13, Cooking Techniques and Food Safety with Demetrius Nesbitt
will be offered from 6 to 8 pm. And, on June 13, Rhythms and
Rhymes hosted by Madafo Lloyd Wilson will begin at 1 pm. The
performance will also include local step teams and spoken
word artists.

NEWCOMERS
Program Series
The Libraries Division, at locations throughout
the community, is offering an ongoing Newcomers/New Americans
Program designed to assist residents from other countries
whose primary language is not English, or who are not English-proficient,
with workshops, lectures and activities that will enhance
their ability to successfully maneuver living in the United
States.
The program offers:
- Immigration talks and citizenship preparation classes
in Spanish, Haitian Creole and Portuguese
- Life skills workshops, such as first time home-buying
and job searching
- Basic computer literacy
- Library tours and orientation for newcomers
- Young Adults Who Are New to America forums designed to
engage first-and second-generation youth in discussion about
the challenges they face
- Cultural programs to share common traditions, values and
mores of immigrants, including cultural presentations in
the performing, culinary, handcrafts and visual arts
