Downloadable Origami
Want to learn origami, but think it might
be too complex? Broward County Library has a new feature to
show you step-by-step how to make origami.
The first lesson is a paper house, which can
be turned into a piano or a bench. This fun origami piece
is easy to learn with streaming video and downloadable instructions.

Be a Part of Summer Reading
Make the most out of this summer with Broward
County Library's 2006 Summer Reading Program. From June 3
to July 29, you can participate in a variety of free programs
and events held at library locations throughout the county.
From arts and crafts to magicians, puppets to performers,
there's something for every interest - and age - this summer
at Broward County Library.
The Summer Reading Program also offers great
prizes for children and teens who read this summer - just
log the time you spend reading this summer and earn great
giveaways from your library. "On the Edge" is the
special Summer Reading Program for teens, and "Book Feast"
is geared toward children 12 and under; each program will
offer fun, prizes and special events geared toward the different
age groups.

Free Downloadable Features
Broward County Library now offers free downloadable
items on its website. You can download a certificate to reward
your child for visiting the library or print out a fun reading
list to keep track of favorite books.
The downloadable features open in a high quality
.pdf document which can be printed on paper, card stock or
even photo paper.
The downloadable features include bookmarks,
certificates, thank you cards, bookplates and reading lists.

Libraries at Top of Customer Survey
A recent scientifically designed and implemented
2006 Broward County Resident Survey (www.broward.org/efficiency)
conducted by ETC Institute shows that BCL provides a high
level of effective service to the people of Broward County.
The survey consisted of a random sample of
1,600 households in Broward County. It was administered by
mail and phone and was conducted during March 2006. As part
of the survey, Broward County was "benchmarked"
and compared to 25 other communities, including such cities
and counties as Denver, Fairfax County (Virginia) Houston,
Indianapolis, Miami-Dade, Minneapolis, San Antonio, San Diego
County and St. Louis County, among others.
In ranking Overall Satisfaction with Various
Services Provided by Broward County, Libraries ranked second
overall, with 81% of the survey respondents indicating that
they were satisfied or very satisfied with our services (behind
only Fire Rescue Services).
Related to specific questions about library
services, respondents by percentage (satisfied to very satisfied)
indicated that:
How close libraries are located to your home (81%)
Helpfulness of library staff (80%)
Availability of the materials you need (75%)
The hours that libraries are open (75%)
Adequacy of on-line information (73%)
Quality and quantity of children's programs (66%)
The Overall Satisfaction rate with BCL compared
to the Large U.S. Average for libraries was 82% compared to
the national average of 74%.
Under the Customer Service section of the
survey, respondents indicating that they had "recently
contacted" BCL reported that:
87% found it easy to contact us (highest rank of all services
ranked)
78% were satisfied or very satisfied with the way they were
treated (highest rank)
74% were satisfied with the accuracy of the information
provided (highest rank)
69% were satisfied with how quickly staff responded to their
need (highest rank of all services ranked)

Disabilities Expo
On Saturday, October 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the
annual Disabilities Expo at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research
and Information Technology Center at Nova Southeastern University.
National Children's Book Week
Since 1919, people everywhere have celebrated children's books
during this special week. This year, Children's Book Week
is November 13 - 19.
Ashley Bryan Art Series Conference
November 17 marks the fourth annual Ashley Bryan Art Series
Conference at the African-American Research Library and Cultural
Center. This event is part of National Children's Book Week.
StoryBook Festival
Let your imagination come alive during the StoryBook Festival.
Characters and programs will transform Southwest Regional
Library into magical place for children to enjoy on November
18. This event is part of National Children's Book Week.


This month's spotlight is the Dania Beach
